For the first time, the government is allowing candidates with degrees from other than the Education faculty to apply to teach subjects like English, Mathematics and Science. Such candidates, however, are required to have at least 10 months of teaching training. The Education Ministry had decided to liberalise the appointment process due to the shortage of teachers with degrees from the Education faculty. TSC did not announce vacancy for primary schools as hundreds of temporary teachers are teaching at the level. The government plans to give permanent status to the temporary teachers who were appointed after April 26, 2006, as per the agreement reached with Temporary Teachers' Struggle Committee.
