Work The main purpose of the National Science Foundation is to provide funding for basic research, education, and training activities in science and engineering. The foundation reviews approximately 40, 000 research proposals and funds between 11, 000 and 12, 000 new projects annually. Most NSF funding comes in the form of grants with an average term of three years, and most grants go to individual investigators or small groups of researchers located at American colleges and universities. " [4] On its website, NSF claims to support "an average of about 200, 000 scientists, engineers, educators and students at universities, laboratories and field sites all over the United States and throughout the world. "
[5] Leadership The daily operations of the National Science Foundation are overseen by a director and a deputy director. These officials create and administer programs and perform budgeting and planning functions. The overall policies of NSF are set by the 24-member National Science Board (NSB), which meets six times every year. All of these individuals are appointed to six-year terms by the President and confirmed by the United States Senate. [5] The 14th and current director of the National Science Foundation is France A. Córdova. She was appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate on March 12, 2014. She was sworn in less than a month later on March 31. Prior to her appointment, Córdova served as President of Purdue University from 2007 to 2012.
