Sometimes, without even knowing it, those fundamental interactions bring change. Conversations lead to friendships. Friendships provide access to lifestyles and beliefs otherwise unknown. People of all races and cultures talk, listen and learn empathy. People in all settings benefit when they find safe spaces to speak freely and be heard. We thrive when we know we are valued, welcomed, and respected. Our job as educators is to pay attention to what our students, staff, and families show and tell us they need. From there, we can find ways to utilize available tools, systems, resources, and talents to help our students and each other realize our dreams. Black History Month reminds us that equity has to be connected with everything we do. As a district, we have taken many meaningful steps to ensure more academic opportunities for minority students. We need more of our minority students to take advantage of AP, gifted and dual credit courses. Black History Month is a unique time in which we are encouraged to talk about race and equity.
R1 intake for J-term is right around the corner. If you're overrepresented (for example, Chinese, Indian, white male), this is a good option for you. There are a few caveats: with the exception of INSEAD, you will be skipping the summer internship. For that reason, J-term isn't ideal for people looking to switch industries. But if you are doing an MBA to advance in your current industry, J-term might be a wise choice, saving you time and money. In the US, your biggest opportunity for J-term is Columbia. If you plan to apply, I would recommend submitting for J-term over regular term after round 2. The application opens in June and has an October deadline – BUT – you should submit as soon as possible to increase your chances. You're probably wondering if applying for Columbia's J-term gives you an advantage. There are mixed reviews. However, make no mistake about it, Career Services cares about their placement statistics because it factors into rankings. If you don't need an internship and already have experience in your desired industry, you 1) definitely won't be dragging down their internship placement stats, and 2) seem more likely to have commanded a full-time job offer by graduation.
We are consistently impressed with the attitudes of jetBlue crewmembers (what they call all of their employees). With a focus on a strong service culture and excellent benefits (we can't find information on flying benefits for crewmembers, but we're sure they exist), it's not a surprise that jetBlue is succeeding because of its people. Although the only information about on-campus recruiting by jetBlue that we were able to find is that they went to a career fair at Harvard in 2005 and have had some sort of training partnership with NYU, that doesn't mean that they aren't looking to hire new grads.
